Community Outreach

"What do you have? What can you do?"

Although our church is very involved in missionary work across the globe, we are also dedicated to serving those here at home in Florence and surrounding areas. Here are some of the opportunities for you to plug in and help out a neighbor:

WESLEY FOUNDATION

The Wesley Foundation at the University of North Alabama is a campus ministry located in the heart of UNA. It's a ministry supported by the Northwest Alabama District of the United Methodist Church. First United Methodist supports this ministry with money from our budget and different classes provides meals for students twice per month.  Students are invited to eat free at FUMC on Wednesday evening at the fellowship meal.

GIRLS' GROUP HOME

Girls' Group Home (Knobe Scholarship Program) in Florence is part of the United Methodist Children’s Home organization. FUMC provides support for the group home with maintenance projects and staffing assistance. If you’re handy around the house with upkeep, repair or building projects, this could be just the ministry for you.

LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS

The congregation of FUMC support a variety of local and regional youth and adult projects, including Good Sams, Camp Sumatanga, and The Caring Place, a local organization providing adult daycare services for elders suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

We also provide volunteers and money for the Help Center, a community center offering food, clothing, and monetary help with electricity, rent, prescriptions and many other needs.

This is an interdenominational ministry of churches in Florence and Lauderdale County and volunteers are needed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

Meals on Wheels of the Shoals provides daily, hot meals for homebound persons who live alone and are in need. This program is administered by Community Action Agency of Northwest Alabama and funded by donations from churches, clubs, individuals and area city and county commissions. FUMC delivers a route every third week. Volunteers are needed and it only takes a little over an hour of your time to make sure everyone receives a hot, nutritious meal.
